Are you attending a conference, interview or work event where the dress code is “business casual”?

What does “business casual” really mean? How can one be business and casual at the same time? How casual is too casual?

Clothing does not determine your actual competency and credibility; it does, however, influence others’ perceptions of your capabilities. First impressions are a big deal, you want to look the part and there is nothing worse than being the only person who is underdressed. The problem is there is no general agreement on the definition of business casual. It depends on several factors including industry, culture and average age of the workforce. As long as you still look professional, feel free to play with fun colors and prints.

 

Appropriate business casual dress typically includes slacks or khakis, dress shirt or blouse, button-down collared shirt or polo shirt, sweater, blazer, optional tie.

Loafers or dress shoes that cover all or most of the foot.
